A temple of Thai indulgence overlooking the Mediterranean.
Asia Gardens is as knock-your-socks-off drop-dead-gorgeous a hotel as I’ve ever seen, and worth every one of its five twinkling stars. Looking like a small dark red pueblo from the outside, when I walked through the main entrance into an enormous lounge area with a vast wood-beam and thatch roof I was overawed. The lovely smile of the Thai receptionist guided me across the acres of open space like a beacon on a welcoming distant shore.
Location:
Set on the slopes of the Sierra Cortina above Benidorm, but only 2km from golden sands. Close to the theme parks of Terra Mitica, Terra Natura and Aqua Natura.
Bedrooms:
There are rooms covering all shapes and sizes, but all are decorated exquisitely. The soft cream walls, oriental black lacquered woodwork, deep king-size beds, and eastern furniture made me want to set up camp for more than just one night, especially when I saw the chi-chi Japanese inspired bathrooms with their sliding glass screen door that look into the bedroom. They even provide a kimono and slippers. For the technically inclined, there is an iPod dock, DVD, a 32-inch plasma screen and WiFi. For me, a book and the squashy bed were enough. And this was just a standard room! If you are feeling wildly romantic and extravagant, reserve the Lankawi Suite with its wooden-beamed loft ceiling for the full-on decadent experience.

Public areas:
Gardens, more gardens and yet more gardens, all beautifully designed and containing more than 300 different species, 80 per cent of which are Asian. Meander the winding paths, with cascades tinkling everywhere and rattan sun loungers set beside a series of infinity pools. Large lounges with big comfy sofas and chairs are inside.
Eating and drinking:
Four restaurants with different styles of cuisine, one right beside the main pool area, and three bars, including a Champagne bar, make sure that there is every type of food available from a simple snack to a gourmet Asian banquet.
Leisure facilities:
With seven swimming pools, two of them warmed year-round, Asia Gardens is a water-lover's heaven, but an important element of the hotel is the Thai Spa that features in its name. Expertly trained Thai staff offer a wide range of treatments, and guests have free use of the gym.

Staff are impeccable, with a pleasing smile from everyone.
