Best for On a budget - Expert review of Market Hotel
Named for the nearby Sant Antoni market, the Market Hotel is a great value hotel, particularly in the low season. It shares much with the restaurants owned by the same group (such as the famous Les Quinze Nits in the Plaça Reial) in that it offers an upmarket look and feel for rockbottom prices.
The only drawback is street noise – rooms at the top are quieter, but you’ll need to change lifts halfway up to reach them. Downstairs is another cheap and cheerful restaurant owned by the group.
Its location down an alley can also make it a little tricky to find, but the hotel will provide instructions. The airport bus also stops nearby (ask for the ‘Urgell’ stop).
The rooms team dark teak beds with oriental-looking red lacquered wardrobes and matching artwork. The rose-head showers are good and strong, and free mineral water and apples are offered; all in all a much classier experience than you’d expect at these prices.
The restaurant, like the hotel, is run by the people behind the Plaça Reial's famous Les Quinze Nits, the nearby La Fonda and various others (all with different names). The Market is run along the same lines - high design but low prices, and food that, while a bit variable, can be great value at its best.
Like the food in its restaurant, the service at the Market Hotel can be variable depending who you get on the day, but room-cleaning and so on is generally efficient.
Its prices make it popular with younger couples and parties (so pack earplugs if corridor noise bothers you).
Book well in advance for the best rates.
