Expert review of Hotel Soho
I recommend this one for short trips, late or early flights and anyone wanting smart, original design and a pool without paying an arm and a leg.
The Soho isn't miles from the centre (it's only a ten-minute walk from Plaça Catalunya), but it's better situated for the airport bus (the Urgell stop is nearby) than it is for the attractions and restaurants of the Old City or the Eixample.
Dapper black-and-white striped bedspreads echo the slatted blinds on the windows and shielding the glassed-in bathroom and are complemented with splashes of warm colour (it varies from room to room) on one wall and in some of the furniture. Adjustable mood lighting in tones of orange or blue wash over the room at your behest. Rooms facing over the Gran Via are noisy – better and cheaper are those looking over the buildings at the back. For around 30 euros more than a standard, you can have a Terrace Room – but be warned not all are of equal size. Go for no.75 if you can.
Big bold statements are made in the decor, which is Austin Powers retro in feel but not annoyingly trendy. Down some steps from the lobby is the 'Media Centre', with a TV screen, a couple of computers (and free internet access) and a terrace.
There is a rooftop plunge pool and decked sunbathing area, with a handful of loungers. Get there early for any hope of nabbing one on a hot day.
Mixed experiences have been reported with the service, but I found the reception helpful and smiling.
The Soho sees a blend of businesspeople and tourists, the latter perhaps slightly younger than average and attracted by the hotel's pop aesthetic.
