Best for Families - Expert review of Asterias Beach

An excellent option for families, behind one of Ayia Napa’s best beaches.

The four-storey Asterias Beach would have to get it badly wrong to negate the supreme advantage of a setting overlooking Makronissos beach, and without being wildly exciting it ticks all the boxes. Pending room renovations will hopefully nudge it up to true four-star standards.

Location:

A lawn’s breadth away from Makronissos beach, one of Ayia Napa’s best, some 2.5km to the town centre – so a hire car or bicycle is essential if you don’t want to feel trapped.

Bedrooms:

At a stretch, a third of the 198 rooms have sea views. Renovations are planned for December 2011, but until or unless that occurs count on light veneer furniture, accent cushions on pastel furnishings and grey tiles. Bathrooms are decent, last redone in 2008, with granite sink counters. There are various interconnecting rooms and family quads, with bunk beds for kids.

Public areas:

A vast, marble-floored lobby looks to the sea, though it – and corridor – decor is most diplomatically described as “eclectic”, with rather garish daubs – pardon, naïve paintings of Cypriot rural scenes – displayed everywhere. Free WiFi signal in common areas.

Eating and drinking:

The breakfast buffet is poolside; other meal buffets are wholesome, if plainly presented, and not terribly Cypriot. Families often opt for half or full board, as it’s a half-hour walk into town. There are also two separate bars.

Leisure facilities:

A strong point is an unusually long (30m) indoor heated pool, naturally lit, near the gym, popular children’s club and mini-spa (for which read massage room, sauna and jacuzzi). The outdoor pool is also good sized, with serpentines and lobes, plus there’s a 5-a-side football pitch and tennis court. A full programme of cabaret, magician shows and “Cypriot” nights may or may not appeal.

Service:

Overall reported good, from a multinational staff.

Who stays there:

Mainly Brits, Belgians, and central Europeans; many families, so it can get noisy

Price advice:

The management refused to quote me rack rates, but other sources promise high-season on-line rates of well over 200 euros a night – ouch.

Pros:
Beachside setting
Supervised kids' club
Cons:
Few rooms have sea views
Fee for hotel’s own beach-beds
